PEEDS PLUMBING

What does it cost to fix a burst pipe?

$350 to $750 for the accessible ones, and a lot more when it is behind drywall or under a slab. Here is what drives the difference.

Water spraying from a split in a frozen, frost-covered pipe inside an opened stud wall.

The honest answer is that the pipe is the cheap part. What decides the number is how hard it is to reach, how much water got out before it was shut off, and whether the same run is likely to go again.

Turn the water off first

Before you think about cost, find the main shutoff and close it. It is usually where the water line enters the house, often in the basement against the street-facing wall. Turn it clockwise until it stops, and do not force a seized valve.

Then open the lowest tap in the house. That drains the pipes down and takes the pressure off the break while you wait, and it is the single thing that most reduces the damage.

The accessible ones

A break in an unfinished basement, a garage, a crawl space or an exposed run is usually $350 to $750. That covers cutting out the failed section, fitting new pipe, and pressure testing the repair.

The number sits in a range rather than at a point because the fitting count matters. A straight section is quick. A break at a tee with three connections in a tight joist bay is not.

What makes it more

Behind finished drywall, the repair is the same but the access is not, and the wall has to be opened and made good. Under a slab, the work involves breaking and repouring concrete, and that is a different order of job entirely.

The other multiplier is what else got wet. We do not do restoration, and we will tell you plainly when what you actually need first is somebody with drying equipment.

When one break means more coming

A single burst from a hard freeze on an exposed line is bad luck. Repeated pinholes in 1970s copper, or any failure in the grey polybutylene used heavily here between the late seventies and mid nineties, is a pattern.

If that is what you have, a repair is a patch on a system that will keep asking. That is the point at which repiping, which starts at $4,800, stops being the expensive option and starts being the cheaper one.

There is no overtime rate, so a burst pipe at 2am costs what it would cost at 2pm. Call, and a person will walk you to the shutoff while a truck is on the way.
